Designing the story of the jewels
The imaginative mind brings life to jewelry
Placing great emphasis on design, Mikimoto began early in the company's history to send its many talented people to Europe to gain precious experience. From the fusion of traditional Japanese shapes, drawings and refined techniques, and of the European design sense arose a distinctive Mikimoto style. Enhancing the beauty of the wearer, Mikimoto jewelry has taken on an eternal quality that yet somehow seems to move and evolve with the ages, reflecting a conception of design that expresses timeless beauty.
Respect for tradition but also for innovation
A fine piece of jewelry begins with a simple drawing. Imagining the final work of art, the designer mentally builds its dimensions. "Traditionally, the original design work was often done with a brush. It was like a miniature of the final work, rather than just a image sketch."
Design Department Chief Tomohiro Yajima insists that there can be no creative production without close collaboration between designer and craftsman. The craftsman must understand what the designer envisages and apply the artistry necessary to bring that image to life.

Yajima says "Naturally, to turn a design into a quality piece of jewelry, the craftsman must possess superior understanding of the gems themselves as well as proper assembly and other techniques. However, it is equally important not to allow oneself to be confined by these elements. One must show respect for tradition but also for innovation." Finding inspiration in the forms embedded in Japanese history and culture, Mikimoto designers continue to exercise their imaginations in creating the Mikimoto style.
