Looking at diamonds, one can sometimes see 'inclusions,' impurities incorporated into the interior during formation or distortions of the crystal, as well as 'blemishes'. Clarity represents the diamond's degree of transparency, based on its quality as well as on the size, positions, and number of inclusions and blemishes.

A gemmologist examines the diamonds at 10x magnification and in accordance with the standards of the G.I.A. grades them in 11 classifications from Flawless (Fl), in which there are no defects either in the interior or on the surface, down to I3 (Included), in which inclusions and blemishes can be detected by the naked eye.
