The experience and artistic sense of the diamond cutter is a strongly determining factor in the final quality of the gem. Cut to the ideal proportions in terms of angles and ratios and with the finest possible finish, a diamond can be coaxed to its maximum intrinsic radiance.

Four levels: E (excellent), V (very good), G (good), F (fair)

The radiance of a diamond is not a single quality. When the three different kinds of light brought forth by ideal proportions and a perfect finish are in harmony, the result is a deeply variegated radiance.

The ideal proportions are those produced by calculating the reflection and refraction of the light required to bring forth the diamond's radiance. Diamonds cut to appropriate proportions reflect incoming light from their interiors. This light then bounces back to the surface and appears in the form of powerful radiance and the various colours of the rainbow.

The 58-facet Brilliant cut is widely considered one of the most appropriate cuts for diamonds. The diamond is carefully cut so that light coming in from above is reflected and amplified. The round Brilliant cut is familiar due its use in engagement rings. Other 'fancy cuts' recently in fashion include marquise, pear-shaped, emerald, heart-shaped, and oval.

To put the finishing touches on the proportions, skilled hands and eyes guide the diamond the final stages, refining polish and symmetry.
