Pearls lose their lustre or even change colour if you allow sweat or dust to adhere to them. Use a soft, dry cloth, such as a silicon cloth, to wipe them carefully.
Pearls grown inside oysters are extremely delicate. Exposure to heat or ultraviolet rays may cause a deterioration in quality, including changes in colour. Do not leave them in direct sunlight or expose them to high temperatures.
Pearls consist of an organic substance susceptible to acids, so if they happen to come into contact with substances such as vinegar, fruit juices, or detergents, immediately wipe that substance off with a gauze pad. Naturally, you should never wear pearls while bathing.
Even though pearls are exceptionally cohesive and shock-resistant, they rank only 3.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, so they may be permanently scarred by contact with sharp objects.

Be sure to store your pearls isolated in a compartmentalized jewellery box so that they don't come into contact with other jewellery. |

MIKIMOTO necklaces are strung on silk strings that absorb sweat and humidity and prevent damage to the pearls. However, if that string stretches or loosens, it may break suddenly. If there is space between the pearls when you undo the clasp and hold the fitting in one hand, this is an indication that the string has stretched. Even if you don't wear your pearls often, we recommend that you have the string replaced every year. |
